MassDebate

With Friends
The party game of glorious arguments.

One screen runs the show. Everyone else piles in from their phones — debaters on stage, voyeurs heckling from the crowd, spectators in the dark. The game deals the topics, runs the clocks, counts the sway, and an AI announcer stirs the pot. Voice happens wherever you already talk; the game does everything else.

yes — say the name out loud. that’s the whole audition.

How it works

Three steps to ruined friendships

01 / HOST IT

One screen runs the show

Fire up the app on the TV, a monitor, or a stream. It makes the room, the 4-character code and the QR — plus timers, votes and the announcer.

02 / PILE IN

Phones are the controllers

Everyone opens mdwf.app, types the code, done. No installs, no accounts, no “what’s your password again”.

03 / GO TO WAR

The room decides

The wheel picks the topic, stances get claimed (or dealt), and the sway meter crowns whoever argued it better. Grudges optional but traditional.

Talk happens on the couch, in Discord, on a call — anywhere you already talk. MassDebate referees.
The flagship modes

Pick your battlefield

1 v 1

Mutual Dissatisfaction

Topic wheel → stance votes → two of you get dragged on stage. Phased rounds, a live audience sway meter, and a winner the crowd chooses.

Team v Team

Mass Debate

The room splits into factions — private team chat, team-name votes, tag-team speaker swaps, and citations popping on the big screen.

One v Everyone

Circle Jerks

One player takes the hot seat, plants a claim, and defends it against rotating challengers until the survival clock — or the circle — takes them down.

Devil’s Advocate — sides get dealt, not chosen
Edging — unanimous rooms get pushed to spicier propositions
…plus side-games between rounds
No dead seats

The crowd is the point

Debaters

On stage, under the clock, fighting for the sway meter. Lifetime stats follow your name — regulars keep their score.

Voyeurs

The crowd, with power: vote stances, sway the meter mid-round, lob questions into the live Q&A — and hop on stage whenever the game allows. You are the jury, and the jury is rowdy.

Spectators

View-only, in the dark. Lock the room and newcomers slip in the back door — a headcount on the stage, not a name — until they ask to join and get waved into the crowd.

FAQ

Questions people keep moaning about

How do you play a debate party game online with friends?

One person runs MassDebate on a TV, monitor, or stream — that screen is the show. Everyone else opens mdwf.app on their phone and types the 4-character code. Phones are the controllers; the arguing is all you. Voice happens wherever you already talk — the couch, Discord, a call.

Is MassDebate free?

Hosting runs on the host's own machine — no accounts, no server fees, no seat limits we charge for. The project is funded on Patreon, where backers get alpha invites and their name in the credits. And ads? Never. Not mid-round, not ever, full stop.

Is it like Jackbox?

If you love Quiplash-style phones-as-controllers chaos, you'll feel right at home — same pile-in energy, zero installs. The difference: MassDebate is built entirely around arguing. Real timers, tag-team debates, a live sway meter, and an AI announcer who absolutely has favourites.

Do I need to download an app to join?

No. Phones join through the browser at mdwf.app — type the code, pick a name, done. The only download is the host app, and only for the one person running the show.

Is MassDebate appropriate for kids?

Absolutely not. Say the name out loud again if you're unsure. The topics can run family-friendly, but the announcer's mouth and the game-mode names cannot be trusted around anyone whose school still sends newsletters.

What if I just want to watch?

Slip in the back door. Locked rooms take Spectators — you watch the show, nameless in the dark, and knock when you're ready to join the crowd as a Voyeur: voting, swaying, and heckling through live Q&A until you dare to take the stage.

Want in before everyone else?

MassDebate is in active development. Alpha game nights run through Discord, and invites, beta builds and sneak peeks go out on Patreon — early backers get their name in the credits, forever smug.
